The Village of Pontoon Beach and Police Department Enhance Community Safety with New Emergency Warning Siren System Installation in Gateway Commerce East Industrial Park

Pontoon Beach, Ill. (March 21, 2024)—The Village of Pontoon Beach, Ill., is proud to announce the installation of a state-of-the-art emergency warning siren system within the Gateway Commerce East Industrial Park. To improve the community’s safety and enhance emergency preparedness and response capabilities within industrial areas, the warning sirens and portable alert systems will provide an audible alert during a severe weather event, specifically tornadoes or other significant emergencies.

The Village of Pontoon Beach Mayor Mike Pagano stated, “On December 20th, 2021, an F3 tornado touched down in the Gateway Distribution Center and hit Amazon, which killed six people. Our city opened up the Village Hall and brought in consolers and clergy for the families of the ones that were killed. The Governor came later, and after he addressed the media, we talked, and he promised me tornado sirens. We never received them, so the Village came up with funds and installed a new early warning system in the Gateway area. It will give each distribution center in Pontoon Beach an early warning portable device for each building to alert management of inclement weather. The Village of Pontoon Beach thinks that the safety of everyone working in the Gateway Distribution Center area is important and hopes the new early warning system will give people time to seek shelter under a severe weather event.”

J.F. Electric, Inc. installed the Whelen’s Mass Notification WPS2900 Series system at the entrance of the Industrial Park. Each of the five warehouses within the Industrial Park will receive a Whelen VA200 Alert Monitor and Message Display system. These portable alert monitors will add more advanced warnings for employees throughout the complex, providing real-time notifications that clearly define the emergency condition and prompt the appropriate actions to take to eliminate confusion and help save lives, even in the most challenging environments.

Additionally, Nameoki Township has installed a siren system that will be activated through the Pontoon Beach Police Department’s base station, where the National Weather Service originates the alerts.

The Pontoon Beach Police Department’s Chief of Police, Chris Modrusic, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts between the Village of Pontoon Beach, the Police Department, and local businesses to improve community safety. "Our investment in these advanced tornado sirens and portable alert systems underscores our unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and livelihoods of all those who call Pontoon Beach home. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and fostering partnerships with our industrial partners, we are taking proactive steps to ensure our community remains resilient in the face of emergencies."

Chief Modrusic emphasized the importance of preparedness and community engagement in mitigating the impact of natural disasters. "Effective emergency communication is paramount in safeguarding the well-being of our residents and workers. With the deployment of these new tornado sirens and portable alert systems, we are empowering our community to stay informed and stay safe, whether at home or work. Together, we can build a safer, more resilient Pontoon Beach."

NorthPoint Development in Pontoon Beach has also committed to installing the siren system to provide emergency services to its tenants and the community in the near future.

This initiative reflects Pontoon Beach’s ongoing commitment to community safety and preparedness during severe weather or other times of crisis. For more information about the emergency warning siren system or to inquire about emergency preparedness resources, please contact the Village of Pontoon Beach at 618-931-6100.
